We accept all these ideas because we make agreements with ourselves and with the world. We create an inner judge, and that judge judges and punishes us constantly if we do not live up to our agreements. In this trial, we create the guilty victim and we are always punished. What others do is not because of you. It`s up to himself. All men live in their own dreams, in their own minds; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. “Be immaculate with your word. This is the first deal you should make if you want to be free, if you want to be happy […] Use the word the right way. Use the word to share your love. Use white magic, starting with yourself. Tell yourself how wonderful you are, how great you are. Tell yourself how much you love each other.
Use this word to break all those little juvenile arrangements that make you suffer. When we see that it is our chords that dominate our own lives and that we do not love the dream of our lives, we must change the chords. Imagine that you could live in a society where the four agreements were a habit for everyone. Imagine that they live in a society where everyone practiced love until he mastered love. That is what is going to happen; It is only a matter of time. There is already a new dream in this world that is ready to be dreamed by people. “If you live without fear, if you love, there is no room for any of these emotions. If you don`t feel any of these emotions, it makes sense that you feel good. If you`re feeling good, everything`s fine around you.
If everything`s great around you, everything makes you happy. You love everything around you because you love yourself. Because you are the way you are, because you are satisfied with yourself. Because you are happy with your life […] happy with your agreements with life. Don Miguel believes that domestication makes us all live in a dream. We base our decisions on irrational and false assumptions about ourselves. We grow up to judge ourselves and others and blame them. We also seek rewards based on a system we didn`t even choose. The dream of the planet is the collective dream of billions of small personal dreams that together create the dream of a family, the dream of a community, the dream of a city, the dream of a country, and finally a dream of all humanity.
Then Ruiz talks about what he calls the dream of the world. How does this dream form when we realize that what we perceive as a reality is just a dream? Don Miguel Ruiz argues that truth in our world is replaced by symbols, words that are nothing but illusions. Nothing that others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, of their own dream. If you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you will not be the victim of unnecessary suffering. This includes voices in their minds. I call this process the domestication of people. And through this process, we are now learning to live and dream. The structure of the four chords is like an oreo: the chords are wedged between spiritual leadership and thought. At the beginning of the book, Ruiz begins with a Toltec mythology and the introduction of the term “the dream of the world”: it is an important condition for understanding the meaning of the chords themselves.
