ARRL DX CW

Played around in this one testing the remote system. It’s perfect with ARRL since you don’t need to rotate the beams since the big tower is not rotatable yet via the remote. Total 18.5 hours of operating time and I had a lot of fun!

This was fun, I took part of the contest working remotely from my work QTH. It
worked great with the remoterig system (http://www.remoterig.com), I could not
notice any delay and pretty much was just as being at the station. I worked
18.5 hours in the contest and propagations were very interesting. At some
points they were awful but they also generated great opening on 10m via aurora,
which would not be possible otherwise with SFI just over 100. I wish I did work
the first night though, that would have given me probably 40 more mults since
160/80m was great, which was not the case the 2nd night and Sunday evening.

Kind of wish I did work this one seriously at location, but there is always
next year.

Here is a video I made a few days ago of the remote control @work QTH,

Yay, a new record which I am very proud of. Felt I could not have done it much better operator-wise considering it was my first SOAB in CW for many, many years.

This was so extremely fun, what a battle! This year I was planning on doing the
CQWW DX SSB SOAB but some problems with my neck and back made me change those
plans to do M/S instead. After going to the chiropractor a few times I felt I
was good enough to give it a try.

The goal before the contest was to do > 4000q, >140z and >500 dxcc. I failed
the last one but I might excuse that on 15/10m being very bad on Saturday up
here, we barely got any solid openings during the whole weekend. It opened up a
bit due to aurora on Sunday which made me able to snatch a lot of multipliers
that were not heard on Saturday.

I did not expect to have a very good and fun weekend because of the prognosis
of the CME that was heading towards earth, but funny enough it seems like it
gave just the right type of propagations that seemed to have helped me to pull
infront in the nordic battle (ES5TV, OH8X, OH0X and LN8W). It was VERY fun to
see on the realtime scoreboard, it really gives a whole new dimmension to the
sport.

Everything worked great at the station. The ACOM 2000A that we got sponsored
worked extremely well on the 2nd radio, moving mults was so simple and fun.
However most people don't seem to understand what QSY 10m? etc means.

I will need to start working out though because I was in so much pain after the
first 24h (shoulders mainly) that I did not think I would make the 48h. However
I did try to move around a bit more and it got a bit better. I was also very
sleep deprevated on Sunday morning so if I acted like a big LID during that
period, please excuse me. But the two 15 minute naps I took in the contest
worked like a charm. However I think I will need to try having a strategy how
to actually get some sleep BEFORE the contest starts...

SO2R is so much easier on CW than SSB. N1MM said 579 2nd radio QSOs but some of
those were periods when I did some CQ on the 2nd radio, so my guess would have
been around 300-400q. I mainly focused on finding mults and not much else. I
felt that when having decent rate I would gain more on scanning the bands
intensivly than working 1 pointers. However my brain did not like having the
right radio as RUN so I ended up turning the VFO sometimes, so I went back to
just using one radio for CQ and the other for S&P. The ALT+F5 command in N1MM
worked very neatly swapping the radio frequencies. And the late addition of
another MKV in the shack made SO2R even more enjoyable having identical
radios.

I hope more people join this scoreboard stuff at http://cqcontest.ru, very fun
when most of the nordic competitors were posting (ES5TV, OH0X, OH8X, LN8W).

Congrats also to Kim, OH6KZP who got to kick some butt from CR2X!

Check our website, lots of fun stuff can be found there and updated
frequently.

CQWW DX SSB 2012

This year as usual we attended in the M/S class. Our hopes to beat last years result were not really high even though propagation’s were awesome the week before the contest. However the SFI dropped by the start of the contest but we did not suffer from any aurora which was a real upside. I had set a goal that if we made over 6000 qsos I would be happy and we did do that with quite a margin. The start of the contest was the most amazing I have ever experienced. We worked 491q first 2 hours, 705q in the first three hours were most were 3 pt QSOs on 20m. After 12 hours we had 2396 contacts and at the 24h mark we were at just under 4000 QSOs. The second day was not as good but we could end the contest with several 100+ hours of 3 pt QSOs towards NA on 20m which is always a relief not needing to work EU on the lowbands.

Comments:

Not as good propagation's as last year so we could not reach last years result.
We can not complain though since we pretty much had no aurora at all during the
whole weekend. The only sad part was that the SFI dropped just before the
contest which made us lose some of the night propagations on 15/10m but 20m was
absolutely amazing during the first night. We did more running on 10/15 this
year which also explains the drop in our 20m numbers compared to last year. It
was nice to end the contest with several good hours of US runs on 20m as a
result. Hats of to the other EU teams that keep competing in the this category
which must be the toughest one in this contest.

We had fun but we are lacking operators as usual, it seems like contesting in
SM2 is not very popular, which is a bit sad.

Everything worked great and we used N1MM instead of Win-Test,and it worked
great during the whole contest and will be used in the CW part as well. We had
three stations running but still no inband option, hopefully its completed for
the CW-part. We lack good flexibility on 20m which I hope to improve for the CW
part with a 5el mono that is rotatable for 20m.

Comments:

Propagations were really good most of the contest. Not enough operators with
SM2WMV and SM2LIY doing most of the operating and SE2T filling in a bit on
Saturday during the day.

The new M/S category is really boring since it pretty much limits the use of a
second mult radio except the possibility to have a radio inband. The M/2
category does not replace the old M/S category either, so WPX has pretty much
ruined it and making it a pure RUN contest.

Anyway, we had fun and managed to get a new SM record. However the goal of
beating OG6N score from 2009 was not reached. But we are happy with the result
anyway.

Check the website for lots of information about ongoing projects and more
information about the station.
