More electronics + CQWW DX CW

I went down to Burträsk already on Thursday and SM2XJP picked me up as usual in Skellefteå. Major work was to get the new 60m Moskojärvi tower rotatable and after a bit fault searching by me, SM2XJP and SM3JLA we found the problem being a shortcut bar in the terminal jack which I had not see when I put it together. When that was removed it all worked great. I managed to setup the station on Thursday so Friday was calm and nice before the competition. OH2UA who is the op who beat both me and SM2LIY in SAC this autumn asked me what our plans were for the contest and was willing to come over and help us out. It was a great addition to the team and Toni fit in perfectly and I sure do hope this was not the last we’ve seen of him @SJ2W. SE2T came on Friday evening but had to leave for a family dinner but was back on Sunday when SM3JLA had to leave.

Anyway it was a real blast and we could not have asked for a better result. Bands were the best they’ve been for a CQWW CW all the years I’ve participated and we managed to increase our Scandinavian record by some 30%

What a blast! I must say that propagations can't get much better than this for
us this late in the year with mostly just darkness outside, it was pretty much
perfect.

We had operator reinforcements from OH in form of OH2UA, who normally operates
for our biggest rivals OH8X and it was a great addition to the normal bunch of
old farts @SJ2W.

Station worked flawlessly and we got the new 15 stack rotatable as well and it
was a great boost for us.

Comments:

This year we were not able to compete with the top M/S teams, too much aurora.
However still decent even though our multipliers were quite low compared to the
top teams, mainly seem to be down on 10m probably due to the aurora. Last year
about 2.36 pts/q and this year 1.98 pts/q which kind of tells the story.

We need to get the new 15m stack rotatable, standing in mud trying to rotate it
in windy conditions and getting it fixed with hatched straps isn't the most fun
but it sure does play nicely.

Still could need a few more operators, its tough trying to stay focused during
the whole contests.

My first SAC SOAB since 2006, hopefully it wont take 8 years until I do the next
one. I had fun, it was quite easy to do 24h even though my body starts aching
when sitting still for 24h. Even tried the CT1BOH style of pee can so I
wouldn't need to lose any time in the chair. It worked, but I need to modify it
so I need to concentrate less :)

Felt a bit handicapped only having one amplifier on 15/10, so when doing DUAL
CQ on these bands I had to go LP with one radio which was noticeable. Need to
get this fixed somehow.

It was a very fun battle with OH2UA @OH8X. We did take turns of being #1 during
most of the contest on the scoreboard (cqcontest.net) and it ended up with about
6000-7000 points between us, so it will be a close race. Its amazing the amount
of mults the Finns are able to get, even though I am quite happy with my mult
count Toni had 21 more mults. I missed some easy ones on 10m, tried to move
them during whole Sunday but I didn't get SP, ON, OM, EU etc on 10m which was
frustrating. Also very frustrating with some people who didn't want to move but
I must say that most people tried so cheers for that.

It is funny how a 24h contest end up so close in both the CW leg and SSB leg in
the battle of the north. In the CW leg 1.6% difference between OH8X and SJ2W and
in the SSB leg about 0.4% :)

The new 15m stack (5x6el) worked great even though its not rotatable from the
shack at the moment, so I ran out on Sunday morning and turned it towards Asia
by hand. Except the amplifier issue the station is wonderful to do SOAB now, it
works really well and is very simple to operate.

Fun to work the first QSOs with my good buddy Dave (N2NL) as WH7AA on 20 and
40m. He managed to work me on 40m with a vertical 20m dipole, so thanks for
that :)

New SM record! Thanks for the QSOs.

Comments:

Conditions were promising thursday before the contest with JAs 599+30 on 10m,
but Aurora before and during the contest spoiled that kind of conditions.
But it did not wipe out the bands totally, was quite good conditions, but not
ideal. 15m closed quite early on saturday and 10m really did not open much.
20 and 40 the main bands in such conditions. VQ94JC and 9N7AD was the surprise
mults calling in this year.

Thanks for the QSOs and look for SJ2W in SAC SSB part also with Mike
operating.
